Quokka – Setonix brachyurus
| The Quokka is only found in Western Australia – on Rottnest Island and in small groups on the mainland in bush land surrounding Perth. They live in dense vegetation, or dense semi-arid heath.Quokkas have a bounding gait with short bouts of rapid hopping, and also have the ability to climb trees to reach leaves.
The quokka is a small, robust wallaby which has long, thick fur and a thick, scaly tail. The hind feet have no first digits, the second and third are fused with a double claw for grooming, and the fourth is slightly long than the others.
The breeding season for the Quokka varies depending on the weather. If the weather has been hot it will begin in March, but if it has been mild it will begin in January. Pouch life for a young Quokka is about 6 months, after a gestation period of 27 days.
